Some types of goods shipped by air have the potential to be hazardous during transport, either in handling or during the shipping process. Certain items are categorized and classified as to whether they are allowed to be transported by air. These potentially hazardous items are designated as Dangerous Goods (DG).
Dangerous Goods (DG) or hazardous materials are elements, substances, and items that are highly sensitive to air temperature, pressure, and vibration. They can pose health risks to humans and animals, endanger flight safety when transported by aircraft, and damage transportation equipment. Dangerous Goods (DG) can be transported by air and other vehicles, provided that the requirements, rules, and handling procedures are followed according to the type/classification of the DG items.
DMK Cargo® accepts shipments of dangerous goods in compliance with applicable regulations, including IATA's Dangerous Goods Regulations, National AVSEC Regulations, and policies set by individual airline operators.
Categories of Dangerous Goods
BDangerous goods as cargo that can be transported by air through DMK Cargo® are grouped into three categories:
- Group A: Dangerous goods that can be transported by passenger or cargo aircraft.
- Group B: Dangerous goods that can be transported by cargo aircraft only.
- Group C: Dangerous goods that cannot be transported by aircraft.
This grouping is based on the characteristics or type of dangerous goods and the quantity to be transported by air, according to the IATA DG Regulation. These categories of dangerous goods can be shipped through DMK Cargo® under the specified conditions.
Additional Information
There are 9 classes and divisions based on the IATA (International Air Transport Association) Dangerous Goods classification:
Class I. Explosives
All explosive materials, which are highly restricted in aviation, are divided into 6 divisions:
- Dangerous goods with a high explosion hazard (REX).
- Dangerous goods with a high projection hazard (REX).
- Dangerous goods with a minor blast hazard (RCX and RGX).
- Dangerous goods with no significant hazard (REX). These include 6 groups with IMP (Interline Message Procedures) codes RXB, RXC, RXD, RXE, RXG, and RXS.
- Dangerous goods with a high explosion hazard (REX).
- Dangerous goods with no mass explosion hazard (REX), such as fireworks and bullets.
Class II. Flammable Gas
These are pressurized gases that are flammable, divided into 3 divisions:
- Flammable Gas (RFG).
- Non-Flammable Gas (RNG), Non-Toxic Gas (RCL), which reacts strongly with O2 (e.g., Carbon Dioxide, Fire Extinguisher).
- Toxic Gas or Poisonous Gas (RPG), such as aerosols.
Class III. Flammable Liquid
These are liquids with a flashpoint below 60.5°, which release flammable vapors below this temperature. This class has no divisions. (Examples: Paint, Alcohol)
Class IV. Flammable Solid
These are solids that easily catch fire and cause flames through friction, divided into 3 divisions:
- Flammable solid (e.g., Matches).
- Spontaneous Combustible, which can ignite upon contact with air (RSC) (e.g., Phosphorus).
- Dangerous when wet, which catches fire or releases gas when mixed with water (RFW) (e.g., Calcium Carbide).
Class V. Oxidizing Substances & Organic Peroxides
These are substances that easily release O2, causing fires, divided into 2 divisions:
- Oxidizing Substances, which promote combustion (e.g., Calcium Chlorate).
- Organic Peroxides (ROP)
Solid or liquid substances that burn easily and can ignite through friction or reaction with moisture.
Class VI. Toxic (Poisonous) Substances
These are solid or liquid substances that cause death if inhaled or ingested. This class is divided into 2 divisions:
- Toxic (Poison) Substances (RPB)
Substance can causing death if inhaled, ingested, or contacted with skin (e.g., Pesticides). - Infectious Substances (RIS)
Substance have containing microorganisms like bacteria, viruses, fungi, etc., causing diseases in humans or animals (e.g., Hepatitis, Rabies, HIV).
Class VII. Radioactive
Materials emitting harmful radiation. This class is divided into three categories based on radiation levels:
- Category I Radioactive (RRW)
These substances have low and often unmeasurable radiation levels, so they do not have a transport index (T.I). These materials are labeled with a white label featuring one red stripe (e.g., Cobalt-60). - Category II
Substances with higher radiation levels than Category I, possessing a transport index not exceeding 1. These materials are labeled with a yellow label featuring two red stripes on the packaging. - Category III
These substances have higher radiation levels than Category II, with a transport index of 1.0 and not exceeding 10 per package. These materials are labeled with a yellow label featuring three red stripes.
Class VIII. Corrosive
Substances that can damage skin tissue or have a high level of corrosiveness and can cause rust.
These materials, whether liquid or solid, can cause skin damage upon contact. If they emit fumes, they are extremely hazardous to inhale and can irritate the eyes. They can also corrode metals (such as aircraft structures) or damage other cargo. This class has no divisions. (Example: Mercury)
Kelas IX. Miscelaneous DG
Solid or liquid substances that have irritating properties or can cause discomfort, including other items considered dangerous but not covered in the previous eight classes. These items can pose a risk to humans (handlers) and aircraft if not handled properly.
Miscellaneous dangerous goods are categorized into four sections:
- Class 9 (RMD): Miscellaneous Dangerous Goods, such as Internal Combustion Engines.
- Class 9 (RSB): Polymeric Beads.
- Class 9 (ICE): Carbon Dioxide or Dry Ice.
- Class 9 (MAG): Magnetized Materials, which can cause an effect greater than 0.418 A/M at a distance of 4.6 meters, or can deflect a compass needle by up to 2°.
Shipping Order Time
Reservations for Dangerous Goods (DG) shipments can be made via telephone up to one day before departure. DG shipments require complete documentation, adherence to DG procedures, and packaging according to IATA standards. For DG shipments and related information, please contact the nearest DMK Cargo® Port Center and Port Agent.
Acceptance of Dangerous Goods
Dangerous Goods (DG) can be accepted at DMK Cargo® with complete documentation and adherence to packaging standards up to 120 minutes before the aircraft's departure. At DMK Cargo® Port Agent locations, DG can be accepted up to 240 minutes before departure.
Acceptance at Destination
The standard time for acceptance at the destination airport is 60 to 120 minutes after the aircraft's arrival. Receipt documents should be prepared for the administrative process of releasing the cargo. Dangerous Goods (DG) must be handled according to arrival procedures to ensure they are not damaged due to shocks, temperature changes, pressure differences, and other factors.
We offer DMK Priority Express Cargo to ensure maximum security, comfort, and speed for your Dangerous Goods shipments.
